Lawrence v. Texas - Protecting GLBT Rights

In the seminal case of Lawrence v. Texas, the United States Supreme Court declared Texas' "homosexual conduct" law unconstitutional, granting gay and lesbian couples the same fundamental right to private sexual intimacy as heterosexual couples.

Katine and Nechman are proud to offer historic photos and audio archives related to this monumental case.

The case involves the arrests and convictions of John Lawrence and Tyron Garner for violating the sodomy law in Texas, which punished adults of the same sex who engaged in consensual oral or anal sex. The same conduct was legal if between two adults of the opposite sex. The conduct was only punishable between homosexuals. This conviction could have forced both men to register as sex offenders in numerous states. Mitchell Katine represented Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Garner throughout the entirety of the case as local counsel and as a cooperating lawyer with Lambda Legal.

I believe had I not found Mitchell Katine, legal history would not be what it is today. I am happy to call Mitchell and John Nechman my friends, and I am proud to have KATINE & NECHMAN L.L.P. as my law firm.
- John Geddes Lawrence
